I am a member of the COGOP and I know we could unite with the COG and have more unity to merge into more areas of the world and it would please God.
I know I should know these things. But what does COGOP mean. I’ve noticed every one or most every uses abbreviations. I don’t know what OP means. I know what COG means. Because I being to this Church Of God. But I don’t know what OP means. I’m earning a lot through finding out these things.
CoGoP means Church of God of Prophecy
O P stands for original poster. G A for general assembly and G O for general overseer.

In the the forties, I used to see Bro. Slay driving around Cleveland in a white and green Packard. His hair was much longer then and somewhat wavy. Later I was to hear him him preach a sermon at the Narragansett Church of God in Chicago. The title of the sermon was; ” God setteth the door ajar and flings it wide open when necessary.” Interesting comment above.
At the 1944 CoG GA, a denominational split was about to occur in the CoG. The issue at hand was over holiness and the Doctrine of Sanctification. The CoG then formulated the Declaration of Faith and accepted it at the 1948 GA which was able to prevent the split that nearly divided the CoG again (the first occurring in the early 1920s involving its General Overseer A J Tomlinson and the Elders Council resulting in the formation of the CoGoP). James Slay was commissioned to write the book entitled, THIS WE BELIEVE. He later stated in a class he taught at Lee College that he wish he had never written the book.
Tomlinson was removed because of mishandling of funds. Thus cogop. He did not get to use the cog name.
Pat Fretwell, in our studies at Lee, you are correct. That is what was taught to us. However, when you go to White Wing Publishing House and purchase their book covering the same subject, you will get a complete different assessment. And the CoGoP maintained the CoG name through the mid 1950s, which was nearly 30 years at that time. I also wish to point out that there are some 600+ different groups/denominations in USA that use the name CoG. The actual legal name of the CoG is “THE CHURCH OF GOD” (Cleveland, TN). The definite article THE is attached to the name CoG.
Maybe the COG should have gone with out a declaration and affirmed the Bible to be their declaration

He is wrong, it is the General Assembly that says that. The General Council, all ordained bishops men, send items to the floor of the General Assembly to be voted by all assembled members.
Why would he be wrong? If I understood him correctly, that was the decision of the ‘sinode’, the general assembly in Indonesia.
