9-11, THE WAR ON TERRORISM, & SUPPORT FOR THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND OTHER WORLD LEADERS
WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, four hijacked planes — American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight 175, American Airlines Flight 77, and United Airlines Flight 93 — in a time span of only one hour and 25 minutes, crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, the West Section of the Pentagon, and a rural section of Somerset County, Pennsylvania, taking the lives of more than 3,000 individuals; and
WHEREAS this violent act of unprecedented terrorism took the lives of individuals from all walks of life, including many different nationalities and religions, and through death touched the hearts of people in more than 60 countries worldwide; and
WHEREAS the events of this one day have forever changed our lives by impacting our personal sense of security and well-being, by challenging us to recognize the ever-present dangers that surround us, and revealing to us the end-time realities that are set before us; and
WHEREAS the Church of God, with ministries reaching more than 160 nations around the world, has in point of fact strategically felt the impact of the horrors of this unimaginable act of terrorism; and
WHEREAS the Church of God has responded through various denominational ministries under the guidance of our General Overseer, and facilitated through the office of our Division of Care Ministries, to assist those who have been most affected by these tragic events; and
WHEREAS we, the Church of God, remain committed to a worldwide ministry of evangelization, benevolent care, and ministry outreach, even in the face of the current threat of global terrorism;
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that we, the Church of God, support President George W. Bush and the numerous world leaders who have joined with him in determined resolve to end the threat of terrorism throughout the world; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we pray for all victims of terrorism around the world and those who continue to feel the pain and peril resulting from intentional harm by others, and that we follow the Scriptural admonition to pray for the salvation of those who themselves are committed to be agents of terror; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that in this 69th General Assembly of the Church of God, we commit ourselves to be agents of positive change by our manner of life, through example, testimony, prayer, and appropriate spiritual demeanor, that we may be living witnesses of the testimony of Jesus Christ and His message of peace and hope to a lost and dying world.

Are you pulling our legs here? You have to understand the context of the statement in question, which appears in most every orthodox statement of faith and many historic confessions, right? No, that statement is clearly not orthodox. I grew up Pentecostal, and Pentecostal statements of faith aren’t so extreme. They don’t exclude the possibility that a prophecy might be authoritative, for example, as far as I know. None of the denominational statements I’ve read do that. And they certainly do not exclude the idea that Christ is the Word of God, or require that one believe that Jesus is the Bible. I have encountered that or similar statements before, but the wording of this one is extreme, excluding Christ from being the authoritative infallible word of God, unless one believes Christ is the Bible. There are many variations of similar statements. This one seems to me to be amateurish, ill-thought out bad doctrine. The Second London Baptist confession says,The Holy Scripture is the only sufficient, certain, and infallible rule of all saving knowledge, faith, and obedience. Similar wording, but it doesn’t exclude Christ from being the Word of God or require that we believe Jesus is the Bible. I would say that might be too extreme. The Spirit guides us into all truth. But it’s not as extreme as the previously quoted statement, IMO.Westminster contains some similar thoughts, but the wording is longing. I’m not COG, but do have a great deal of interest (and history) with both COG and Lee. From discussion here, and some things said to me by COG pastors and people who live in Cleveland, how valid are these assertions and how can the be documented? I have met COG pastors who said they would no longer recommend Lee to their church kids, and yet I have met some great people who have gone to Lee. Is it just becoming another private university, or is it still the bulwark of Christian Education in the COG. This is the 100th year of Lee, and much is being made of its beginnings, but what of its future? Would F. J. Lee be pleased the school is named after him?I have met some great Christian leaders who attend state schools. Great education, half the cost (or less) and all the issues of our culture. They chose not to let the culture deflect them from their educational goals.Just asking.

I definitely would say it would be sinful to encourage a Lee student (or anyone else) to embrace their homosexual desires as good instead of sinful. That said, regarding students who weren’t ‘out,’ it is not clear what the school could really do. Kick all the guys out who seemed gay? Can you say lawsuit? And as far as kids going out to area bars, I’m guessing the school probably doesn’t have the time, personnel or the energy to keep constant track of students to prevent that from happening.
In fairness to Lee – when I saw Lee students partaking openly at a bar – I was shocked – but a local Mom said – why would I be shocked – their Cleveland parents have taught them that drinking is ok their whole lives. Being born in Cleveland and spending a great deal of time there with family even after my parents moved us away, I have some observations.Cleveland – Bradley County (?) – was at one time a dry county. You did not see a line of bars up and down the streets, but at some of the hotels (generally the ones with restaurants, beer, wine and liquor purchased, if you knew who to ask. When I was a teen my friend was cook at the Chateau he took to a bar in there which served beer (was was under age at the time).There have always been bootleggers in Cleveland, some had drive through windows at their places. For years it seemed, the sheriffs were all named Cannon (of both parties) and there was always bootleggers. Makes you think.When Cleveland when wet it was with the justification that the good restaurants would only come to town if they could have a bar. So the good church people in the holy city of the south voted away being a dry county.One day, if not already, there will be a sports bar in Cleveland, near campus, with a Flames theme.

But to imply that this is the norm from parents in Cleveland or anywhere else in the COG, hey, OTCP simply don’t believe it. Rules on dress code, class attendance, behavior, etc… that a person even with a low IQ should be able to easily ascertain the difference from the freedoms the Bible allows… but alas, I see it is too difficult for some.________________

Is the Bible in its original documents infallible? We don’t know, do we? We used to say the Bible was infallible…then we found some problems, and we hedged by saying, OK, but the ORIGINAL documents are infallible. Of course, that cannot be proven or disproven, so it’s not falsifiable (at least until we can do time travel and see the original docs).The SCRIPTURE are infallible. The Bible contains the scriptures, but cannot be logically itself be called the scriptures.

It is apparent by action I have witnessed that footwashing is not held as sacrament by most Pentecostal churches. It is not on the same level as water baptism and communion.

I saw an article about Israel being a nation for 70 years, and I thought back to when everyone was SOOOO sure that a generation was 40 years, and that 1988 was the latest that Jesus would return.But if you read in Genesis, God tells Abraham that his descendants will be in Egypt for four generations…which winds up in the 400 year range.It’s just one more good reason to resist trying to act like we know what prophecy means. Along with this jewel, I will remind folks that…The Beast was a computer in Belgium.That the bad guys were the USSR…I mean the European Common Market…no, wait, China…rather the European Union…I mean Muslims…or maybe it’s China.When we teach such TRASH–especially when we say it with authority and assuredness–we do a great disservice the the Kingdom.
