Could Elijah Call Down Fire from Heaven at Will?

Acts20.com NEW Acts-Celerate

At Mt. Carmel, Elijah prayed, and fire came down from heaven and consumed the sacrifice. Then, he got a message from Jezebel who was seeking to kill him, ran away, heard God at Sinai, and got some instructions and came back. Here, the king sends soldiers to bring him to the king. He keeps calling down fire from heaven until one captain begs for his life and the lives of the others. Then an angel tells him to go with the captain and not be afraid. So was the calling down fire from heaven thing Elijah’s idea. Was fire coming down and consuming people something that happened under his ‘stewardship’? Was the angel intervening here, keeping Elijah from calling down fire on the people again________________

  1. I am sure I could not be trusted with the ability to call down fire from heaven at will. While Elijah, I am sure, was pretty close to God, could he handle it either? And if he did have the power at will, would he have ever cowered in hiding? If I had the power, I am sure I would let them drop me in Iran and do a walkabout for a few days – calling fire down as necessary.Repeat in North Korea.Repeat in Cleveland TN. ________________

  2. 51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.

  3. Looking at the context, the idolatrous king apparently needed to be reminded who the one true God is, and how seriously he hates idolatry, especially when practiced by a king who definitely knew better.

  4. No I do not think he could. But on the lighter side I remembered what my brother, a port gunner on the ship, said happened on His Destroyer Escort in WWII in an actual battle and a suicide plane headed for his ship. The Skipper ordered over the 1MC, FIRE AT WILLHe said that the Starboard gunner actually Yelled to him, , Hey Frank, Who is WILL? then fired until the plane was in the sea, before it hit their ship. He said that to explain to his kid brother how ‘silly’ crazy some folk acted under the pressure of war, facing death.WILL, has been in danger for years. ________________Some facts but mostly just my [email protected]/

  5. At woulda been real funny, Cojak, if I had used Fasteeth in ma dentures today. But I didn’t. An now my dentures is layin on the carpet about 8 feet from my computer. Sooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnn, at was one more belly laugh…………………………………………………….

  6. That’s funny, Cojak. You are really making us laugh with some of your posts lately.I’m reminded of something else about Will. A while back Chief Charging Battery was studying a chart in the back of one of his Bibles about the succession of the Caesars in Bible times. It can get confusing with all the different names that were used for those people and Chief Charging Battery definitely remembered studying a Tiberius, who wasn’t listed on his chart. I assured him the internet could answer all his questions, so I went to Wikipedia and started reading to him. I came across one tidbit that baffled me when it said that Augustus (aka Gaius Octavius aka Octavianus) was adopted by Gaius Julius Caesar (aka Julius Caesar) posthumously. I wondered aloud how one could adopt someone after he was dead (and exactly which one was dead first). As I continued to read and follow links, I had an aha moment when it said that

  7. Since he was a prophet I think his faith side & the doubting side crossed lines at times. At Carmel he was bold & probably a little agitated & he knew how to scare the daylights out of the fake prophets. Then that woman Jezebel scared him with her threats & he sort of doubted for a little bit.He was just like one of us except he had that O.T. prophet ministry where they had to be correct 100% of the time or else.As one poster said, as soon as he got a fresh word from the Lord he was back in the saddle again calling fire down.Keep in mind he also got swept away by a chariot of fire so maybe fire was his own trademark. I believe he is coming back with Enoch as the 2 witnesses who do awesome miracles (fire will probably be one of them) before they are publicly killed.________________Empty nest syndrome is for the birds!Email me at: [email protected] planters are focused on just one thing …introducing people to Jesus!

  8. Being on the run from someone who has sworn to kill you is not necessarily a sign of doubt. More likely it’s a sign of discretion. David had to stay on the run from Saul for quite a while, even though he was ultimately trusting God with his life as his psalms attest. Speaking as in summary bonnie not as in literal time composed management. In the overall scope of time we see in the narrative it’s acceptable to determine that his running off after hearing her threat probably caused him to have doubts about his own safety & well being …otherwise why run at all? Facts are he regained his composure & we read the end results. For me …just for me, if I were experiencing these glamorous God like pronouncements & suddenly was the talk of the table at the palace with a death threat, I am able to say that worry, doubt & fear would all be showing up on my emotional roller coaster until I could better see my options.Elijah or not he was only a man!________________Empty nest syndrome is for the birds!Email me at: [email protected] planters are focused on just one thing …introducing people to Jesus!

  9. What about speaking in tongues? Could a Corinthian in Corinth only speak in tongus as God led him to do so, or was it possible for him to use the gift out of order, for example speaking without an interpreter in a disorderly manner, (I Corinthians 14:27-28 ) or give thanks publically in tongues when he should do so with the understanding (v. 17)________________
