NAME OF CHURCH (p.15)
“This reflects an interesting trend in our churches. In the past, Church of God were designated by their geographical location and the denomination name. Today people are supposed to be allergic to denominations (even when they have no idea of what the Church of God is) so we have inventive names such as “Cathedral of Praise” and “Ministry Center.”
wrote Don Warrington, but this is not a new event. Churches have chosen non-denominational names for half-a-century. Here, however, it seems to be a concern about affiliate churches and therefore with the change of the denominational identity. What do you think – is the church’s name part of its identity and future?
CHURCH AND STATE (p. 17)
“This isn’t the usual stuff on this subject, but a deletion of our preference for a democratic form of secular government. This may seem odd, but I suspect we’re taking it out for the benefit of our bretheren in countries where it makes the government angry.”
This is exactly what the issue was and for all its worth this item is definitely not “minutia”. And not just angry, but aggressive toward Christians. A good example for the issue was the discussion on the Declaration on Israel, even after the Assembly still remained unresolved and unpublished.
Even more worrisome is that the church and state relationship is constantly devolving in the U.S. as well. How do you think this affects us in light of the last State of the Union?
