Wayne said something that made me smile. He said once he wondered why the man up front was yelling at him. I remembered when my grandson asked me the same thing.I was born into the COG, I teethed on the benches, I am used to loud preaching. We welcomed a new preacher about ten years ago who held a Dr of Theology degree. He had taught at Lee. One of our sweet older ladies, and mean really sweet, not snide. She said I like his message, but I wish he would preach instead of teach. At the time I was really enjoying the change, I could follow the message and understand a good part of it. He has ‘learned to PREACH’ over the past 10 years and now I cannot understand him.With her statement I thought going home of the ministers I have been able to understand over the years. I can count them on my ten fingers. On Sunday morning I would find Heyford or Stanley on TV. I was blessed to hear Charles Conn only for a week, but I understood about 100% of what he said. I heard a man a couple weeks ago at All Nations who was very good.With my hearing problem, I have questioned my wife, and many other older folk about a message, Did you understand what the preacher said? most did not. I asked one pastor (who was kin to me so I didn’t feel awkward asking him), Can’t you slow down a bit and pronounce the words, some of us are missing a lot?His answer was, God gives it to me so fast I can’t slow down.So I have decided if I don’t understand it, it wasn’t for me. I think if God meant it for me I would understand it, wouldn’t I?I have never did a study on it, but when did the ‘Fiery Preaching, running Yelling (for lack of a better word) come into the church world? I thought it was exclusive to the Pentecostals, but it is in many denominations.Most folk use our Example Jesus, as a sitting or standing preacher. Most of the time teaching in story form.I know a couple examples seemed to be bombastic, but I see THE TEACHER doing just that teaching. I wanted to add, we attend two churches on a fairly regular basis (8-10 times a year that is regular for us)One is a small church, only a hand full of members. The pastor is a great preacher. Former State overseer and other admin jobs. I have said it many times, when our leaders retire they could be such a blessing to small churches who NEVER see an official.This man of God blesses me every time I attend. When we are in the area we are anxious to attend. I enjoy and am blessed by the sermons I HEAR there as this minister actually ‘ministers’ to these folk with ‘Camp Meeting’ type sermons in a way they can be heard and understood.I have to give credit to a man and his wife who are HAPPY to serve the few________________Some facts but mostly just my [email protected]/
It’s amazing how people prioritize style over substance isn’t it Cojak? If someone doesn’t yell, they are perceived as a teacher who can’t preach. So much of our perception is based on our conditioning. If you were raised in a church where the pastor screamed, then likely that will be your standard for preaching. A lot of it is cultural as well. I am invited to speak a lot at black churches. Being mixed, I am quite comfortable with all styles of music and worship. But I don’t preach in tandem with an organ or wipe my brow with a handkerchief so that takes some people aback.
Doctor of Ministry, not Doctor of Theology. Heap a difference, Cojak.
Boy am I glad I didn’t have to learn all that stuff when I pastored, I might not have lasted the 6 or 8 years. hahahahaha I just called every body Doc like ever body else!
