After my sad experience with Frank Culpepper’s refusal to offer me another church I notified Robert Crick and he expressed dismay at my treatment. He got in touch with Billy Rayburn at Chicago Metro and my wife and I moved to Glen Ellyn to pastor Park Boulevard Church of God set on a hillside overlooking the Metro State office.
Bro Rayburn in no uncertain terms dictated to me that I was to clean out the church of the current membership. He said they will not work with me and that the church was to start over with new people. There were bad feelings on both sides; the congregation and the metro office.
However after a year most of the congregation buckled down and would not leave, naturally with holding their tithe support. So after a year with a new baby we were sent packing without another Church.
It did work out for the good for us as my wife’s mother had cancer and in a few months died and we got to spend time with her in Atlanta. We got involved with a couple of churches in Stone Mountain area. Doraville COG and the church pastored by T.L. Lowery’s brother. These were good experiences.
After this we took the call to go back to Germany to work in the Servicemen’s Department.
We liked Billy Rayburn and his wife but I should have known that I was getting in trouble when we first talked. I don’t think that church ever made it nor did the metro office last very long after that.
It takes a real man to clean out a church and I wasn’t the man but if I had been they should have been gone the first two months. However a good overseer would not tolerate that and the pastor will be gone. Bro Rayburn was a good man but not a good overseer. Few are!
