I remember him preaching at the MS Camp Meeting many years ago and saying he didn’t want people speaking badly of the old time saints. He said I have heard it said, “long hair long tongue, some of those with short have long tongues to”
I went to his other son Jerry’s church for a while
Approx. 35 years ago he preached that sermon they eluded to at Pa. Camp Meeting, “If You Can’t Take It, You Can’t Make It”. That is always in my mind. It surely stuck with me. He is a giant of the Lord and the Church of God.
I was Ordained under him when he was the Overseer of Florida in 1992.
Between Darrell and Jerry, there is a daughter, Donna, and then the youngest son is Bob. Our families were friends from the time of my birth, and I am 59 . In fact Gene Rice was the State Overseer of Pa. and got my Dad, Flavis L. Burroughs Sr. to move to Somerset, Pa. and Pastor the Somerset Church of God, which at that time was where the Pa. State COG Headquarters were located, or what people affectionately called “The Grove”.We lived there 6 years, where my one brother, Flavis Jr. and I graduated from high school, and then both of us went to Lee. To this day Somerset, Pa. is still one of my favorite places that I have ever lived. Gene was a year or two older than my Dad, who would have turned 83 this coming September, 25th.
