If you want to reach the people with a relative gospel you must delete the name “Church of God” and the logo.

A CoG near here built a large building and called it the; ” Temple of Praise” but four years later changed it again to; ” True Life Church.” Your comment may be right but it is very hard to find just the right name. Often when companies change names they spend a lot of money making the new name familiar and sometimes explaining the meaning of the new name. Churches usually don’t have the money or the inclination to do that. Also you run the risk of offending the older set who have a lot of emotion in the older name. They have put a lot of time, money and love in the original name. It’s a tough row to hoe.
I would rather have 30 people that are on fire for the Holy Ghost than 500 that are wanting to come play church. Yes we must reach more people, but we cannot do it at the cost of sacrificing the heritage of Pentecost that the COG has carried us for 110 years
I would say in most settings unless the name Church of God is widely known for legalism the name would only help. The average person does not know the name Church of God but the Church of God is still one of the few denominations in the Trinitarian Pentecostal world where people are still loyal to it. So to take it off unless you have boldly listed where people know it is Church of God what it is you are hurting yourself.
I’m not much of one for logos and names and marketing for churches. But if you are going to have a name and logo and engage in marketing, at least “do it right,” and create something slick and trendy looking and sounding. Otherwise you just don’t look like you care. Hire the right people to do this.
Just the other day I drove past a baptist church that was named “So and so Memorial Baptist Church.” And I’m like “who the heck is so and so, and why would the church be named after him?”
It is not the name on the building that attracts or repels people but it is the members that compose the local congregation that makes the difference. I joined the COG while a student at Purdue University but had trouble getting other students to buy in due to cultural differences.
