I’m not being snarky, I promise you, but doesn’t it takes more than tongues and interpretation to constitute Pentecost. Perhaps not so much a desire for sophistication, but an absence of zeal.Why can’t we be like them? I believe in all the gifts, but I see Pentecostal Power as the Spirit filled power to win souls as the last words of Jesus on earth in Acts 1:8-98But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.†9 After He had said this, they watched as He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.…We often forget about this as it is more comfortable to do the verbal gifts in a church setting instead of obeying the Lord’s command in Mark 16:15And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.The the verbs used there are in the imperative in greek. Great post… no disrespect intended to any opinions in this thread (this is just mine) but when I see Pentecost reduced to just tongues, or to emotive expressions like shouting and dancing, it seems like the true power of Pentecost is being overshadowed.
I grew up in an era when it wasn’t cool to be a Pentecostal. That’s probably a great understatement. I remember being made fun of because of my beliefs. Over the years, I have come to the conclusion that much of my earliest exposure to “Pentecost†was the result of cultural norms of the day.
I never once heard my dad speak in tongues in church, in his office at home, that is a different story. When he prayed it was groaning and tongues in his office. Now mama was a different story, I did hear her speak in tongues in SS and in church.Yes growing up in the 40-50 time frame, Pentecostals were ID’d by tongues, so tongues became the center of many of our churches. BUT that was not the only identification then, it was their lives.We had a tendency to become pharisees by seeing who could be the plainest. sorta like If He says only walk 2miles on the Sabbath, lets require only 1.That probably comes across wrong, but I tried. ________________Some facts but mostly just my [email protected]/
Jesus told them to tarry in Jerusalem until they received the promise of the Father, and that they would receive power when the Holy Ghost came upon them to be his witnesses.I’ve often thought that somewhere along the dusty trail, we forgot the primary reason for the empowerment and branched out with our own interpretation. Shouting, running, dancing are all outcomes of the exuberance one feels after being filled with the Spirit, but they are not the reasons for the initial infilling.At least, that’s how I look at it now that I’ve got more of life behind me than I do ahead of me________________“Hell will be filled with people that didn’t cuss, didn’t drink, and may even have been baptized. Why? Because none of those things makes someone a Christian.”
