Not sure. Babylonians were impalers. In II Chronicles 32, Hezekiah redirected stopped water springs and brought them elsewhere. Did he get out there with a pick and shovel or did he have it done? Some things are done through agency. Some things are done on behalf of a group. The disciples asked why the ointment with which Jesus wasn’t sold and given to the poor. But in John we read that it was Judas who actually said the words. Judas gave back the money, and it was used to buy the field. It could be that we aren’t given the sequence of events and they bought the field after they found his body in it. I imagine an owner of a field full of pottery shards willing to sell so as not to have to deal with a dead body on it, and chief priests seeing this as an opportunity to deal with a social problem of where to bury the poor.

Imagine a corpse hanging from a rope for who knows how long, exposed to the sun. We know that the human body swells due to the release of decomposition gases. We also know that the human body will after a time swell to the point where the skin can no longer remain intact and will explode. Medical forensics has long documented this.I have always been of the belief that when they moved the body of Judas to the potters field, that it was then that his body literally exploded and his intestines came out. Either that or the tree he hanged himself on could have been on or very near the property of the potters field. When they cut him down the body could have literally exploded upon hitting the ground.
