My son's co-worker said he was attending a nice, friendly church and when he inquired about joining, they asked to see his W-2.This was not a Mormon church; it is pastored by a man with a Baptist background.

Never heard any church ask for that other than the LDS. I have spent a few months in Utah. My grandson who is not LDS but his mother and family are. He mentioned to get a 'Temple Recommend' a desired piece of paper for a business man, he would have to show his W-2 and donations to ensure he is paying at least 10%.I cannot imagine any church doing that, maybe a cult or near cult. We have a large Southern Baptist Church church here that does the same thing. They want to make sure you​ are tithing.

That was what I was gathering from this conversation. The pastor of the church I'm referring to was educated at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.I know a couple who attended that church for a while (don't know if they still are) who were very generous people but who did not see 10% as a NT mandate. I wonder if they became members or if this church policy was instituted more recently.

Pentecostals have been accused of being legalistic (by Southern Baptist)in the past. I wonder if they see how legalistic this is?If I really wanted an accurate picture of things, I would want to see last years tax return and maybe have him fill out an income statement.

That sounds rather nosy and legalistics. The laws about tithing don't address the type of income received on a W2, does it? Most of us don't have flocks and crops of Israel reported on our W2s.I was in a PhD program with a Mormon accountant who had some kind of role in their hierarchy. In accounting, you can count things different ways. It doesn't make sense to tithe off the revenue in most cases, and you can stretch your costs out over years and factor in depreciation in different ways. I asked him what kind of tithing Mormon churches expected, and he said they didn't mind that much as long as you tithed in a reasonable way. I'd imagine for a W2, they'd want 10% of take-home or have a specific formula for it. Mormons also have an internal social welfare system

My brother was asked for proof of income when he married a Catholic. Her priest said it was required so that could insure the tithe income. This was about 30 years ago or so. He refused with a few choice words for the priest. He also had to sign a pledge to rear their daughter as a Catholic. She now sings on a praise team at a Pentecostal Church in Johnson City TN.
