IMPOSSIBLE! Schools (a large majority) have sold their academic souls to sports. Producing students who cannot put a simple sentence together, but know how to carry a foot ball thru a line of heavy hitters. It is a shame, but to me it is true. I attended two high schools, and both were sold out to Football. The team members were allowed Mondays off and counted present in all classes and given passing grades for any test missed.I do not know an answer, but we love hard hitting tough football teams. I am not sure we can even suit them up enough to prevent the injuries. I am sure the members of the families losing the kids do not think it is worth it now, but that minority will NOT be heard (LOUDLY). Some facts but mostly just my [email protected]://shipslog-jack.blogspot.com/

I think years ago there was a different mentality, sort of a 'Do no harm' but win. I cannot remember a fight between boys that didn't end up every sorta shaking it off, and actually remaining 'friendly'. Now there seems to be the idea of 'hurt someone'. Go find a bigger stick, a knife or a gun.Every fight I remember growing up as a teen, each boy had a pocket knife in his pocket (you could bet on it) but I NEVER saw one taken out in anger.

Here's another thing... better helmets and safety equipment are causing people to be less concerned about their own safety. Rugby is generally a more dangerous sport than football, but you don't see these kinds of injuries in rugby because hitting someone hard hurts you, too.

I think we are seeing much stronger athletes. Add that with the sheer showmanship of youth and injuries will be more commonplace. How is the idea of a LEE football program coming along

When I played high school football 30+ years ago, the only serious problems I recall us having were guys getting either heat stroke or a concussion. It was rare to hear of any high school player dying from football. I do recall even back then the animalistic mindset that some had about sticking somebody really hard, as if inflicting pain on your opponent, if possible, were a great thing.
