Where I grew up, most people believed Jesus was poor. Most of us were poor financially, so maybe it was fine with us if Jesus was too. None of us followed Him because we thought if they had cars back then, Jesus would have driven a Maserati. Personally, it does not matter to me if he was rich or poor. What matters is who He is and what He did for us on the Cross. Even so, he obviously did have some money. He headed up an evangelistic team of 13 (including himself). Thirteen men can eat a lot of groceries. There was enough funds in His earthly organization until there was a group Treasurer. That does not mean Jesus was rich. There have been lots of times when ministry was increasing but it did not mean riches for the evangelist. Just because a church is growing does not mean the pastor is getting rich.THE PROBLEM we have in society now, is that most TV ministries have put so much emphasis on money, until viewers get the idea that coming to Jesus is some kind of lottery-winner guarantee. When God doesn't stamp their hoped-for lottery ticket of riches, they lose faith in God, the church and preachers.Doyl |

Soteriologically, it matters little if Jesus was rich or poor, only that his work on the cross is adequate. The problem is that the Bible does not portray him as rich. What matters is:1. The prosperity gang preaching he was rich when the only way they can do so is to misuse, misinterpret scripture and deceive the gullible.2. Promoting a rich Jesus encourages many Christians to seek riches, you know, the blessings of Abraham foolishness, when the Bible clearly teaches that the blessing of Abraham for New Covenant believers is soteriological.3. How many churches have a treasurer, but barely pay the bills from week to week. This is such a ludicrous position it is hilarious. The presence of a treasurer guarantees wealth/riches/abundance no more than the presence of a nice shiny automobile guarantees it has a motor, or the presence of a set of golf clubs implies that one can score a 72 on 18 holes. |
