In my opinion, based on how Paul couches the law in his writings, he is being sarcastic because the law does NOT say this. He is repudiating the exclusion of women by citing this very phrase that most probably was a quote from an earlier letter to him.In v 36 he seems to blow this away by reminding them that his teaching/leadership fully allowed women a place at the table. Here are some comments from Craig Keener on this verse.Scholars have read this passage from various angles. Most likely the passage addresses disruptive questions in an environment where silence was expected of new learners--which most women were. It also addresses a broader social context in which women were expected not to speak much with men to whom they were not related, as a matter of propriety. Paul thus upholds church order and avoids appearances of social impropriety; he also supports learning before speaking. None of these principles prohibit women in very different cultural settings from speaking God's word.

When read with 12 & 13, 14 continues to address bringing order to the chaos prevailing in Corinth in general. The abuse of spiritual gifts, in particular tongues, create a chaotic scene and required guidelines. Just an observation:Even in verse 39 of chapter 14 he tells both brothers and sisters they should be eager to speak in tongues and prophecy but it should be done in an orderly way. And it is not difficult to notice both brothers and sisters beginning his instructions in verses 26 - 33. On the other hand, some translations don't include 'and sisters in either verse. Although, 11:5 does seem to support women prophesying and it's definitely talking about a women or wife. Good catch, back at ya, Bonnie.

Yes, I looked that up last night in a couple of versions to see. The KJV had brethren and the NIV had brothers and sisters. I looked at the Strong's definition of the word used there, adelphos and figured it would depend on context whether women were included. However, since it concerns speaking in tongues, singing, interpreting, and prophesying, we should be able to deduce that it includes women. (Though that deduction might just be a bridge too far for some of our bishops.)In any case, the reference in chapter 11 to women prophesying is very specific in gender, so clear that even... okay, that's enough snark for one post, lol.
