(Romans 11:29KJV) For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.I imagine most of us have been taught that it means that when God calls or gifts you, He will never change His mind about that--or something to that effect. But at the same time, I have often heard it said/preached that this or that person did not obey God, so God moved on and used someone else instead. Is it even talking about such things? |

The verse is a summary of a principle found in what I refer to as the Patriarchal Formula. God's dealings with Israel depend upon the promises and calling God made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The covenant God made with Abraham (Gen 12:1-3, 7; 13:14-18; 15:1-21; 17:1-27; 22:1-19) He extended to/through Isaac (Gen 26:-15) and Jacob (Gen 28:10-15). The terms of the covenant became foundational for the manner in which Yahweh acted on behalf of Abraham and his descendants, Israel. When Israel cried out under the tyranny of Egypt's cruel taskmasters, God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Exodus 2:24), a factor Moses reiterates in Deut 7:8by declaring Israel's deliverance from Egyptian bondage was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath which He scored to your forefathers. Exodus 6:8reveals Yahweh's promise to lead Israel into the Promised Land was based upon His covenant with the Patriarchs. The northern tribes, Israel, received a stay of impending destruction because of Yahweh's faithfulness to the covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (2 Kings 13:22-23). The exile of both Israel and Judah was part of Yahweh's chastisement designed to bring Israel back to Him.Regarding Paul's words found in Romans 11, here is the full context: |

I have heard it preached/taught the reference addresses God's callings and gifting in general, more specifically call to ministry, gifts for ministry, etc.Yet, the context in which Paul uses the thought suggests the specific usage addresses God's dealings with Israel through the ages, and all because God made a Promise to the Patriarchs.Others may say it is a blanket clause for all of God's callings and gifting, and it seems reasonable to assume if God has called someone to ministry and given gifts in ministry, then He won't recall these things. To use this passage, however, seems to go beyond the purpose Paul had for citing it. Then again, a good reference Bible will cite several passages addressing God's calling. God-HonoringChrist-CenteredBible-BasedSpirit-Led |

I heard a preacher say once at a church I visited that this means we don't have to repent to be used in the gifts of the Spirit. She cited fallen TV evangelists as proof. I kid you not. It's very hard to sit there and see the word of God butchered so |
