Post subject:  Da Sheik: Are you having uncomfortable conversations?

In your churches or on social media? Our church is incredibly diverse ethnically and politically so I'm seeing (on social media) and hearing (in Sunday School classes) interesting discussions regarding the recent election, refugees, etc. I'm very proud of how our membership is handling all of it.

I don't know about most churches but so far on visits, I haven't heard anything at church. Social Media is something else. I am embarrassed for some preachers and my kin who do not know how to have a 'civil' discussion. We are driven by the media, and that is a shame. I hate major NASTY divisions. But I expected a rough start, and that is what I am seeing.I have developed a wait and see attitude, I wish others could. Some facts but mostly just my [email protected]/

I guess the hard part is trying not to be inflammatory when you feel passionately about something. When I think about refugees, I think about Elian Gonzalez being sent back to Cuba, I think about the pregnant Chinese women who tried to come here to keep from having to abort their babies (and being sent back to China), I was just recently reminded of Jews on a boat to Cuba during the Nazi regime being sent back to Germany (half of them being killed in the Holocaust). Charles Krauthammer called the Executive Order amateurish in the way it was done, and it seems embarrassing that no provision was initially made for Iraqi interpreters.

I think that's a wise position for a pastor. More and more as the years go by, I am thinking that's wise.

Very true. That's why I tend to abstain from political topics on social media. We have as many Democrats as we do Republicans in our church due to our community and my ethnicity. I can appreciate that stance and I agree completely. My dad was a pastor and he just refused to discuss politics. One church he pastored was a real politically motivated church. The republicans and democrats actually sat on separate side, but they really did get along and associate. I was strange. I remember very well when we lived there Ike ran against Adlai. EVERY on came to church wearing their BUTTONS showing their choice. These folks shouted and praised the Lord together. Weird to a kid. Dad's first statement was, please do not ask me what my politics are, just assume I am what you are. They all laughed and it worked for him.Today? I am not so sure. But I really did appreciate the comment Some facts but mostly just my [email protected]/
