Do you have joint banking accounts?Brandon Bohannon wrote about his wife in the thread Why do some married moms work? She pays tithe into the church that we pastor, she pays for our health insurance, she makes two car payments and auto insurance, she pays for wifi and satellite tv, and she pays to send both of our sons to a camp each summer. She paid for me to go on my very first mission trip. We use our combined tax refund to pay for home updates and vacations. For awhile she was an airline employee so we used her flight benefits to travel. This isn't about Brandon or his wife, what he wrote made me think of several couples who have their own bank accounts and they have an agreement on what bills each will pay. When me and my wife got married we made the decision that what was mine is hers and what was hers became mine... bills and all.

We have multiple joint banking accounts. What's mine is her's and what's her's is her's! We Dave Ramsey our weekly and monthly budget, but I am responsible to handle certain expenditures and she is responsible to handle certain expenditures. Together, it is a team effort. When counseling other couples or soon-to-be couple, I encourage them to pray, discuss and find what will work best for them. My wife is brilliant, has multiple degrees and teaches math: algebra 2, college algebra, precalculus and calculus BUT gets stressed easily over money. I'm not nearly as mathematically gifted as she but I am organized and do not get stressed much over finance. So we discuss everything and nothing is hidden or separate but much is left up to me to give direction as to where to send our resources. What if it were the other way around? What if she was better with money? A wise couple leverages the strengths within the couple regardless of stereotype and preconceived notions about gender roles. I am NO liberal in life or doctrine. I do believe that God gives wisdom to those that seek it.Good discussion and questions Ernie Proverbs 3:5-6; John 13:34-35; Acts 1:8

Post subject:  Ernie Long: Thanks for the input Brandon

When I saw what you had wrote on the other thread, it made me think of couples who continue to have separate bank accounts after getting married. If it works for them, that's great, not judging. I know several couples who have separate checking and saving accounts and I have asked them why? Some tell me it's easier for them to keep track of their own bills.I've eaten out with a couple who considers what money they earn belongs to them and when the check came, it was almost time to bring out the gloves over who ordered what and who was going to pay the check. I told them the next time ask for separate checks and each pay for their own meal. Not saying this is the standard or the norm, but it's a lot easier to me to have everything going into one account.

I'm bringin' home the bacon, but we have joint bank accounts. There is an account I'm not on because I have to go to the bank to be added to it and it's hard to find the time. We've got a main account we receive my salary into that's joint. Then we have joint accounts, I believe, for our spending money. That way if we use a debit card for something, we aren't giving out the money we receive my salary into. (Credit cards are safer than debit cards, usually, but that doesn't work well for us where we live and debit cards are the way to pay for stuff.) One of the main reasons we have joint accounts is so that if something happens to one of us, the other can get the money. That's something to consider when it comes to owning property, personal property or real estate
