That’s a bit of an overstatement IMO, but he was definitely a sharp theologian. Very knowledgeable in biblical languages, etc. Also had an earned doctorate from Stanford.

  1. When I was a pastor in the LA area back in the 1980s I would watch him a couple of times a week (he was a constant on TV since his church had a broadcast station). I even when by his church and walked into the office to see if I could meet him.Much of his behavior on TV was governed by his battles with the courts over some kind of bankruptcy problem the church had, and perhaps their broadcast license. He would rerun the same song by a southern gospel quartet over and over again. He would sit in his church with a leather coat on (in LA?) smoking a pipe and not saying a word, or go into tirades about how smart he was. I don’t know what was broadcast to the rest of the country, but his 24/7 TV station was spiritually weird, in my not so humble opinion. One thing I remember him saying was that he had a pretty woman secretary in stead of a man so that if anybody accused him of having an affair at least they would get the gender right.Does he live on in reruns or YouTube?Mat

  2. I know I’ve been living in a very small town but I never heard of him. Sounds like I didn’t miss anything________________“Hell will be filled with people that didn’t cuss, didn’t drink, and may even have been baptized. Why? Because none of those things makes someone a Christian.”

  3. Gene Scott. Like pretty much all cult leaders, “PMS” sums him up. Power, Money, and Sex. (And not the power of God, either). What a shame. I’m not really sure what made him so bitter and hateful. He sure could manipulate people to send in money though.

  4. I knew little of him, but my uncle would watch him and got me to watch a few times. Clearly, Gene Scott is an, um, acquired taste. But even so, he said something things that were enormously enlightening to me.1) He pointed out that all the prophets would say Thus saith the Lord, but Jesus didn’t. He would said, But

  5. Watch this brief clip, and tell me if this man is a great theologian, much less, a humble servant of Christ: youtu.be/RUclEZl3AIEHe says, “God’s work hangs on 600 miserable dollars!” What an incredibly pathetic God/theology Scott had!

  6. When we lived in SoCal back in the 1980s, our family watched Scott often. The above rant was typical of the way he would act on his show, threatening and commanding people to pick up the phone and send him money. His widow, PMS, has endeavored to clean up his old videos, and controls virtually all of what people see of Scott’s ‘ministry’ today.
