I don’t throw anything away. This is the May 13, 1970 Lee Clarion. “Holy Ghost Sweeps Campus” written by George F. Johnson. Wednesday Chapel service, April 15 The Vikings basketball team had charge of the chapel service. Revival came to the campus and continued from Wednesday – Saturday.
If you were there can you remember this and what impact did it have on your life?
it was non-stop student led worship and admin closed classes. The revival spread across campus and spilled over to off campus locations.
I made a spiritual connection with my “wife-to-be” slain in the
spirit beside the piano in the Brown Auditorium. My marriage was made in “revival” and I still believe in revival.
I remember it well. Out of the 72 hours of continuous revival, I may have had three or fours hours of sleep. A precious memory.
It was truly a great time. I will never forget it. I was a Freshman at the time. My wife and I just started to Lee in September 1969. The revival was in the Spring 1970. There were people getting baptized in the Holy Ghost on the lawn. The street was closed off. It was a time that I will never forget. T L Lowery was there. Raymond Culpepper held a revival at North Cleveland CoG shortly thereafter.
Thanks Charles for posting. I keep things too.
I was there. I was greatly impacted by the great move of the Holy Spirit. It was like church services that had long ago disappeared. Great crowds came to observe and then experience personal revival. Parents brought their children to see what a revival looked like since this had never happened in the congregations where they regularly attended. I saw this to be genuine. If you feel differently … that it was fake or manufactured … you are entitled to your opinion. My prayer is, “Lord, do it again! … and let me be there.”
we who were there know it was not manufactured by man!
When Lee College heard that Asbury College (I believe it was Asbury) in Kentucky was experiencing a great revival that shut their college down and the power of God was falling upon their campus, it seemed to compel Lee students to sincerely seek the Lord.
Prayer was often offered in the Prayer Room under old Main Auditorium. The Prayer Meeting moved to Brown Auditorium. And then the Spirit of God fell upon the entire campus. Students were praying everywhere, on the lawns, in the street, on the sidewalks, and in class rooms. What a sight to behold. God was giving us another great stirring of His Spirit.
Nothing like it since that I have ever found.
I remember Mike Gibson writing to Lee on the twentieth anniversary of this great revival, but he told me it fell on deaf ears. He claimed they really did not want to hear of it.
We had a mighty revival start in Dr. Denison’s class in the early 60s. It spread all over campus & many off-campus students were saved. Just about every student was greatly affected & I can remember the moved of the Spirit in both the boy’s & girl’s dorm.
Does anyone remember how it ended? By one student who grieved the Spirit. When the self-appointed prophet (a student), who had little to do with the revival, stood up during the Saturday night moving at Main and began to rebuke the staff, the teachers, and the students. He was quickly sat down by some student leaders, but it so grieved the Spirit and pierced the hearts of the students who were praying and testifying tthat the revival atmosphere began to lift and things began to return to normal. How easy it is to quench the moving of the Spirit.
Yes I remember him. He told a student in a lunch line to drop her tray and lift her hands and praise the Lord. She did and it was a mess. There are so many people who desire to be in the limelight and be someone “important” instead of being “sanctified” and possess a humble heart. If I recall, it seems to me that his first name was Wayne.
The shortness of the revival was a shame. I wished it could have continued for a much longer time frame.
I remember seeing Brother Lowery come through the left entrance doorway of Main Auditorium and stand against the wall near the first window with tears in his eyes and his right hand clutching a white handkerchief and covering his mouth as he moved his head slowing back and forth with a fixed state of delight. I was expecting him at any moment to move thru the students and begin laying hands on them. Not this time. He simply stood there with a humble persona that seemed to say, “Thank you, Lord. Bless them!” I returned to praying with a student. Later, I looked up and saw him leaving with his head bowed and wiping his eyes with his handkerchief.
The Spirit used students to lead the revival. Teachers and staff were there, but their involvement (at least wherever I was) was mimimum. It seemed to me that they did not want to appear in anyway as obstructors or motivators. They were one with the students.
