Here in South Carolina many of the churches (parishes) which were part of The Episcopal Church (TEC) withdrew from the national denomination, taking their buildings, dioceses offices and camp property (on Seabrook Island) with them. They, for the most part, dropped the use of he term Episcopal and have reverted to the use of Anglican. Some of the issues regarding the brake away included same-sex marriage, ordination of homosexuals and abandonment of the Gospel for the Social Justice agenda. Many of the Anglican ministry who broke away from the national organization are Spirit-filled, including their Bishop, and had to forfeit their retirement plans (in a separate civil case the Bishop is being sued by TEC for claiming to be the Bishop of the state dioceses and receiving funds intended for TEC).Yesterday, the South Carolina Anglicans suffered a reversal in the State Supreme Court. Up until this ruling, those in South Carolina who left the national church had been able to keep their property. With this ruling a season of great uncertainty has come on those seeking to be faithful to the Bible (my opinion). The SC Court, made up of five judges, includes a woman who is a member of TEC and whose husband is part of their leadership and she did not recuse herself from the rulings. This battle is revealing itself as struggle between darkness and light. The national church (TEC) is known for their scorched earth approach to dealing with those who try to leave their ranks with property in hand. The good news is that the courts can take the property, but they can’t take the soul.
