Don’t praise like God like, …. acts uninterested. Do it like this– screams and acts excited. Half way through the sermon, say something about the congregation looking sad and tell them to say something goofy to one another to get them to smile. When my wife went to Bible college (Bethel, COG in Indonesia, same denomination as my friend), they told people who did worship leading not to criticize the congregation. For me personally, if people looked a little bored or lost while I’m speaking, hopefully I realize I need to change my tone of voice or something like that. I got a lot more of those looks back when I was struggling to speak in Indonesian than now in English________________
It’s not surprising that a quote like this was from a minister who left the Church of God and became independent! Also, it’s the practice of Mr. Page (a minister who left the Church of God) to publish material like this quote — which is just another attempt to discredit the Church of God organization! However, they both need to know that the CoG is not just a Church of the South. There has never been discrimination, or segregation, in any of the CoG churches I have been a member of for over 55 years!
T. L. Lowery was a segregationist up to the 60s. Most COG ministers were segregationist and some still are.
I had suggested back in the mid 1970s that we change the college name to Lee University of Southern Tennessee or L.U.S.T.!

Charles, there seems to be a clear answer to your question and it revolves around the use of definite and indefinite articles. No, you are not wrong in the most basic sense based on what you presented. It seems “the” biblical mandate that you took from your tenure at Lee many moons ago was solely evangelical in nature. Here at Lee, we recognize several biblical mandates — hence the use of the indefinite “a” in the quote you provided — and one of these is serving others. Where I would call you wrong is in your attribution as to motivation. I would attribute this so the social consciousness as introduced by Christ throughout his ministry, as opposed to any secular school of thought.
Sounds like this is biblical. We are to learn to serve others or of a heart of love and not to be seen of men.
