Dallas Church of God

Acts20.com NEW Acts-Celerate

Dallas is well known in the Gaston County area of North Carolina as the ‘fundamental’ hard or true line COG. Bro Shortridge is well respected for his ‘hard line’ (some call it that) to remember the early days of ‘Holiness’. Dallas is a well respected church. Good folk. ________________Some facts but mostly just my [email protected]/

  1. I occasionally watch them online. Indeed, I love that kind of singing and service. If I lived in the area, I’d want to go there…but, alas, I think we would probably be looked upon somewhat as outcasts due to the way my wife dresses (modest, but with jewelry, etc.)

  2. A common sentiment. We have several folks who drive from neighboring counties to attend our church for this very reason.Real Holiness is not harshness or condemnation.Real Pentecost is not gimmicks and cheap theatricals. One brother told that if the word got out about us in the next county, we would be pressed to accommodate the number of folks who would show up for church________________Charles A. HutchinsSenior Pastor SPWCCongregational Church of Godwww.spwc.church

  3. It is sad that many like our Brother Shortridge and others like him feel that there is not a place for them in the Church of God anymore. They are considered old line and harsh. However, they are only living and preaching the way that we taught them to live. They just have remained true to what they were instructed.

  4. I won’t join in with them. I can definitely worship with them. i would not offend anyone who is dedicated to holding the 1950’s line. God Bless ’em.I am not better, wiser, smarter nor more holy than anyone who ‘toes that line’, but I do see things different. I am considered very liberal by my friends at Dallas, but I love ’em. None of them have said I am going to hell, but I do get that impression. ________________Some facts but mostly just my [email protected]/

  5. Bro. Shortridge has a good reputation in the COG. I don’t live in the area or even near it, but, if I did, that would be my kind of church. They don’t put on a show – just plain worship – I like that.I hate performances that I have seen in a lot of our churches. Some of the ladies look pathetic – tight blue jeans in heels and jumping up and down – service is so programed – down to the minute. Leaves God out and LOUDNESS is mistaken for the anointing. We older ones know the difference.

  6. You sure about that? Down to the minute?I have attended lately services that the minister was THROUGH (observing the congregation) but he kept on saying one good thing after another for 30 more minutes. Half his congregation was gone when he dismissed and he didn’t seem to know it. That church has dropped from 150to 35 in worship in a year. Schedules in 2017 are important. Nothing is wrong with closing a service on time or the ‘minute’ as you say. But if you have a children’s church or Teen group, they end on /Sunday normally at Noon. A pastor places these volunteer leaders at a disadvantage by extending his service ON A REG BASIS 30 minutes past the normal dismissal.

  9. AMEN I am not that old unless you consider middle age old. The church I attend does a variety of music. Some old some new but always done well and dressed appropriately, but not old fogie (is that a word) either. Our pastor preaches the word and lets God move but also doesn’t hold the congregation hostage.I LOVE my church. It has everything. Not extreme one way or the other. The Holy spirit moves.Sing Hymns Sing modern songs.Has a full blown choir that does musical and such.Even a handbell choir. Some 50’s style thrown in as one person stated.GOD is good.

  11. There are many churches where the pastor calls everyone forward after church, and yes lots of folk ‘head for the door’. I stopped going forward a long time ago. With my hearing problem, WITHOUT fail, someone will try to talk to me. When I say Sorry, I cannot hear in a crowd, they speak LOUDER, AND LOUDER! COG folk love to talk to one another anywhere, even in a prayer line or prayer group. I cannot do it anymore. Most seniors (over 60) do not hear well, people mumble and in a crowd iT is worse. That said. I suggested once that the same prayer could be just before the sermon, or in the middle of the praise and worship, even during the praise and worship. Preachers can Multi task. Since I try to do a lot of lip reading I watch the pastor, even when he is praying. Before the sermon he is moving his water, arranging his notes moving stuff and at the same time fervently praying. Surely he can pray for the sick and needy during praise and worship, IF THAT IS A PROBLEM.Actually some folk feel more religious staying past that noon dismissal which has been decided by ‘the nominal’ churches that cannot allow God to work.Sorry to sound a little warped, but that is me. I still love the Lord and know He loves me. He is GOOD! But toeing the line 1950’s style does not mean anyone is closer to God than those who do not. Tradition does not amount to Holiness. I have several kin folk who still live the old line. I love them, I probably judge them too harshly the way they do me. But they come across as good Biblical Pharisees. I only attended Central Church once. I had the idea they were time conscience, but I also felt the Great Spirit of God in that service. One of the best churches I have ever had the privilege of attending, and it had nothing to do with the size. That morning Loran lead the choir, took prayer requests and received the offering (Just like many pastors did that morning). He dedidated 10 babies and preached a moving sermon and still dismissed at noon! Just saying..________________Some facts but mostly just my [email protected]/

  12. Fantastic!![/quote]I can like that! And the handbells. We visited an Alliance church lately and they had the hand bells. I can hear bells!!!! ________________Some facts but mostly just my [email protected]/

  13. In case any of you are interested, I saw in a FB group today that the Dallas COG has a FB page and you can watch their services there. They also have Youtube page________________More of Him…less of me.twitter.com/camiracle77www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=691241499&ref=name

I enjoy watching Dallas online. It reminds of me of Swaggart’s service but has a Church of God flavor. Does anyone know how many attend there now________________Hate to say it, but its trueNew Orleans Bred, Mississippi Led, Hopefully Arizona will be home before I’m dead.

  1. Dallas is a refuge to COG members who feel that other churches in their denomination have caved to the world. It is a needed nitch, and it is filled. Most C’sOG in Gaston County have lost members to Dallas. Some are my best friends from childhood and good folk.If folks have left, they are probably less ‘conservative’ than the core of Dallas. We have a couple churches that are STRONG in members who feel that the rest of us are becoming too worldly. Bless them, they are, on a ‘whole,’ good and dedicated Christians. God bless them all. ________________Some facts but mostly just my [email protected]/

  2. Is the other Dallas church not Conservative________________Hate to say it, but its trueNew Orleans Bred, Mississippi Led, Hopefully Arizona will be home before I’m dead.

  3. I was at the 1990 Western North Carolina Campmeeting. It was Sunday morning. I decided to go to Paw Creek/Joseph Chambers, since we received his newsletter and were of a more conservative cast than many other Church of God members. But on that particular Sunday morning, it was as dry as powder. I think it was because Bro. Chambers felt such angst over the worldliness (as he deemed it) that he had witnessed at campmeeting. To ME, however, having come from the Florida Campmeeting just days prior, I felt like I had stepped into a TIME MACHINE that took me back 10-15 years–back to when the Florida Camp Meeting was TRULY the granddaddy of them all! They dressed like the folks did back in the day, as far as I was concerned. I saw very little jewelry, etc.(In fact, Dennis McGuire, the state overseer at that time, made a comment that caused me to think that there were people criticizing his daughter for, apparently, not being as conservative as they liked. I need not tell you that Dennis McGuire is as OLD SCHOOL Church of God as they come, and he said something like give my kids time! He deserved better than that. In any case, he put on one of the most memorable campmeetings I had ever been to, and for that I am deeply thankful.)The singing, the preaching, the response–all of it–was like it had once been in Florida (and, to my knowledge, it was not until THIS years–2019–that I heard reports that the Florida Camp Meeting was, once again, as good as it ever had been). In any case, Paw Creek Church of God didn’t have it going on the Sunday morning (I have no doubt that that was an off service, but it was, nevertheless, the only opportunity I had to be with them). I wish I had gone to the Dallas Church of God. They had sang one night and, oh, how the glory came down! But, nope, stupid me, I had to support the conservative faction (which, at that time, was headed by Paw Creek–but today is headed by Dallas). My wife is DECIDEDLY not conservative, and yet, if I lived in that area, I would almost certainly be at Dallas Church of God (or Central). I know they are different types of church, but from what I have seen online, I’d enjoy them both.

  4. Agreed with Aaron Scott & Cojak on the conservative/liberal tolerance thing. Went to a church and carried our worship team/band.We checked our decibels during the service and they were no higher from our band than when their choir sings yet we were scolded for being too loud. It’s a mind set thing I think. No we didn’t sing I’ll fly away, but people were ministered to mightily during the service. But some just thought it was terrible________________

  5. They are Christian and middle of the road as far as COG is concerned.Funny thing about that church. The structure is very close in it’s architecture as a Baptist church a few blocks closer to Gastonia. Once a friend of mine, an overseer, was going to be a guest preacher there and mistakenly stopped at the Baptist church. During Sunday School the Overseer’s wife asked where the Pastors wife was. The lady said, I am the pastors wife! She was first to realize they were in the wrong church. The class got a good laugh and red faced she found her husband and they headed to the Dallas COG up the road.So they are not Baptist, but good COG people at the ‘other’ Dallas church. PS: Both churches are in a sort of a forks of the road, one to the left one to the right________________Some facts but mostly just my [email protected]/

  1. Nope, truth is I have only met him personally once.Through several brethren who know him very well I feel like I know him.I am aware of his testimony and his history.Forty eight years pastoring the same Congregation in the Church of God.He began with seventeen members. Now the Church occupies two city blocks of property. He fasted forty days to pray with a woman suffering from anorexia. He prayed for her and Jesus healed her.I could go on.Faithful to God, his wife and family and the Church of God________________Charles A. 4. Strange thing this, I was just within 20 miles of Dallas for the last 3 months, attended the COG near Dallas and haven’t heard this story….I am now in Florida and hear it.I am sure Danny himself has not been charged or accused of anything. With the gossip mill in Gaston County I am sure I would have heard it.So, my friend Sheepdog, what is he supposed to be charged with? Now you have my curiosity up, since I know folks who attend there and haven’t heard a word.If he has been charged, it is not gossip.. is it________________Some facts but mostly just my [email protected]/

  5. That’s just it.He has not been charged, yet he is out as Pastor of Dallas. The issue was embezzlement, however an audit cleared him________________Charles A. HutchinsSenior Pastor SPWCCongregational Church of Godwww.spwc.church

  6. On the Dallas web site it says that he is retiring after 48 years with the church. Pastor Shortridge is now 77 and his wife is 80. They have health issues, as most of us do. I hope they enjoy many wonderful years to come.

  7. Hey Cojak.Your friend is mistaken.Pastor Shortridge has been removed________________Charles A. HutchinsSenior Pastor SPWCCongregational Church of Godwww.spwc.church

  8. Not sure about that but I just read that he and his wife are retiring…..He is about as old as I am and it is understandable. If he was forced to retire I have not heard or seen it anywhere.the friend I mentioned had not attended there lately and was repeating what a member had told him. I should not have used that. sorry ________________Some facts but mostly just my [email protected]/

  10. No skin in the game here, but out of curiosity did the Shortridge family members also leave________________“Hell will be filled with people that didn’t cuss, didn’t drink, and may even have been baptized. Why? Because none of those things makes someone a Christian.”
