Anytime this happens in the religious world, MANY FOLKS do not believe the accused. The reason being it seems every year or so some high profile ‘Pastor, Bishop, TV Evangelist crashes and burns. I’m not saying Bishop Eddie Long is innocent, but there are people who will tell lies on high profile people to get money. Or tell lies on ordinary people just because they’re mean and full of the devil. And there’s no way to disprove a negative. If you are innocent, what can you do to prove you haven’t done what they said? And what they’ve said is ruining your reputation and it’s all over TV. I’ve had someone lie about me before, and it’s a horrible feeling. What if someone actually believes it?The people who know you won’t believe it. They won’t believe for a minute that it’s true. But the people who don’t are gonna be like that woman in the audience shaking her head. Yeah, right… What if someone was telling those same lies about you as a minister of the gospel and it was plastered all over TV? Well, if a person were innocent, why would he agree to a court settlement that bound him from saying so? I think if I were innocent, I would not even agree to a settlement with my accusers much less agree that I would be bound not to proclaim my innocence.
If I were him, and was innocent of these accusations, I would not hold back. I would at the very least say, Prove it. If no proof were forthcoming, that would be that. Innocent until proven guilty is still how it is in this country. And if you’re truly innocent of the charges, no court can make you shut up about it. All the convicts in prison say they’re innocent every chance they get. Why would he contemplate suicide over FALSE charges?! This whole thing with Long smells like yesterday’s fish guts.
I have no idea, even if I have a feeling, whether or not Eddie Long is guilty. BUT he cannot, by law, speak about the merits of the case. That is usually the way settlement agreements work. Neither party can call the other party guilty. In this case, the defendants can never say again, Eddie Long seduced me. At the same time, Eddie Long cannot cast the defendants as liars and blackmailers.His forthright answers, either innocent or guilty, about his emotional state, were probably unnecessary and an attempt to recapture some market share in the marketplace. He has lost a lot, just like Swaggart, and will never return to the place he once had. In one sense, that is it’s own judgment. Bishop Long is in somewhat of a precarious situation. I agree, if innocent the best thing would be to come forward and lay it out for all to see. However, if there are indeed possible legal implications, then he is in a difficult situation. We all have seen time and time again, ministers being accused of some type of sexual impropriety while innocent.
People settle because there is enough merit to the opposing side’s evidence and theory to cost justify settlement. In this instance, if Long agreed to mute claims of innocence, and to mute claims of lack of proof of wrongdoing, it is because he sold his voice to his opponents for their own silence. Don’t wear rose colored glasses. Instead, be incensed because the valid claims about ministers’ abuse give the color of reason to false claims that will soon surround more Christians. Eddie Long’s actual harm to Christian testimony will make a little easier those similar but spurious claims against Christians in general that are on the horizon________________
