While the House of Representatives must vote on the bill and nothing but the bill…the Senate can add all sorts of riders to a bill.Thus, a bill about, say, drilling for oil in the Arctic, might also include money for a museum in Key West. In other words, in the Senate, the rider may–and often does–have NOTHING to do with the actual bill in question…except that if the president wants to pass the bill, he has to accept all the junk attached with it.
Ah ha! I did not know the attachments were in the count. Soooo Imma make a small donation for my congress man to add a double driveway for me (Maybe a house and double garage!) on the next transportation bill. Thanks for pointing that out. I understand why Reagan wanted a line item veto.
The Republican Congress (House and Senate) would not pass it.So we see that both Democrat and Republican politicians are both foolish, ignorant, and will be the ruin of America.I propose going to a new way of selecting our Reps and Senators….Every state, based on its population (for Representatives), will select that many representatives from the various districts. Those eligible must be the Constitutional age minimum, must be born IN America, and have resided here for the last 10 years. They serve ONE TERM–thus, there’s no need to try to win reelection, so less chance for lobbyists to make much headway.
In my lifetime something was passed into law ‘concerning line item veto but maybe term limits,’ it was something in that area and the Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional. I could be way off base, but I can remember something that the supreme court ruled unconstitutional that I thought the decision was wrong. ________________Some facts but mostly just my [email protected]/
You’re right, Cojak. The line item veto was passed in 1996, IIRC, and was thrown out as unconstitutional in 1998. McCain and some others tried to pass a more limited version in 2006 (that’s what Aaron’s referring to, I believe).I think the line item veto is bad news, personally. Too much power vested in the executive. The 2006 version focused just on earmarks, but I still think it deprives Congress of the power of the purse.
Thanks DAve, I do have a problem with memory. I also have a problem with understanding government. I can remember several things I thought were great that were passed by Congress until in reality hit me and I said to my self, Why didn’t I see this coming! One in particular when a Republican congress untied the attorney’s hands and allowed them to advertise. They no longer were ambulance chasers, but it allowed them to advertise on Bill boards how much they had won in cases of law suits against companies. FLORIDA is AWASH on the roads with thousands of Bill boards touting things like: INJURED? GIVE US A CALL WE GOT jOE 5 MILLION DOLLARSAnyway somtimes Ican’t see past my nose.
