I need some history help on the Church of God in the state of Kentucky. First, who was the first State Overseer, and secondly, when and where did the first State Convention/Camp Meeting?I can’t find my Book of Minutes that covers that era, and not sure the details would be in the Assembly Minutes anyway. Could use some help, so if you find it, post it, and include source if you will.Thanks,

I know nothing about Kentucky, but curosity got the best of me. What years are we talking?I was just wondering how many states had an overseer early?My dad joined the COG from the Fire Baptized in the 20’s as an /evangelist. He was ordained in 1940 after organizing and building the S.Gastonia COG in NC. I always considered him a pioneer COG minister. Church history did not interest me. I never heard a bad word about the split, since it was probably before his time, but I never pictured many states involved in the 20’s.Anyway, I was just curious what years you are talking about. I think it was 1911 when state overseers were first appointed. Maybe 8 states or so. Still trying to fine out when KY had its first convention.
According to The Church of God of Kentucky – A History 1911-1987. The first State Overseer was Sam Perry, appointed in 1911. The first four churches were organized during 1914-1915: Blanche, Dallas, Somersrt and Cedar Grove. The first record of a Kentucky Campmeeting was a 2 week campmeeting held in July of 1916 at Big Clifton.

I knew someone on Acts had the right answer.Mat Once again according to the History. The Church of God and the Mountain Assembly had met and agreed to join, but it wasn’t ratified by the churches. When I was living in Knoxville I drove up to Jellico and attended one the COG Mountain Assembly camp meeting/convention. Nice folks, but I would say they have a different church culture from COG. I remember that Conn blamed AJT for the churches not coming together, but I’m not sure that is the reason. If that were the case when PH and COG were exploring coming together it should have happened because AJT was long gone. Rather, I think they are just as entrenched in their system as COG is in its system. Besides, no little fish likes the idea of being swallowed by a big fish.

Dixon Pentecostal Research Center and Dr. David Roebuck are both great resources for information about the Church of God Movement. As a matter of fact I have placed items/documents/pictures in the archives and support this important ministry. Dr. Roebuck is a greatest forces for cooperation and reconciliation within the movement. He combines the Spirit with scholarship to bless all interested in our shared roots.However, sometimes its interesting to post on Acts. Often you hear from those who live in the state or have history available to them, and they can respond in short order. I got the info I needed, its was sourced and I was able to pass it along to the person who had the question.
