Look, even under the Law of Moses, there were divorces. So, let’s say that every church handles their own marriages and divorces, etc. Well, eventually, some hardshell churches will refuse a divorce for nothing except fornication (not adultery, not molesting children, not killing the children…fornication). Other churches will allow divorce for adultery, too.Other churches will allow divorce for simply dissatisfaction, I imagine.Some churches will allow homosexuals to marry. In other words, we have an chaotic, ignorant mess. THAT’S WHY THE GOVERNMENT IS AROUND.As long as there was only one denomination, so to speak…as long as the issue was only between Jews and the Law…it was all fine. But as soon as it expanded, we had to have some means of organizing the laws of marriage and divorce. So the government had to step in; it was the only force powerful enough to override the churches (and their various stupidities).Consider that you are divorced and remarried. You go to rent a property in which the owner will only allow married couples. He denies you because he does not consider you married if you’re not with your original partner.It just gets crazier and crazier.
Someone could get married or divorced by the state and their actions can be invalid in terms of Biblical Christianity. Let’s say the state gives a marriage certificate to two dudes. That doesn’t mean that God recognizes them as married or that our churches must recognize them as married.Let’s suppose a man loses his six pack, and his wife, a Christian but at a very low point spiritually, decides to divorce him. She gets a divorce certificate from the state. That doesn’t mean she is free to marry someone else. She should reconcile with her husband________________
The problem is that scriptural notions of marriage and divorce are subject to interpretation. Which is why churches/denominations can have such widely varying views.I AGREE that the Church should be the judge of these things. But the fact is that the church has so many splinter groups, so many interpretations, that one cannot look to THE church…but must look to THEIR church…or the one that they find most in alignment their own views.
