This was posted today as part of a gofundme project to help the family:Trey Smetana’s Medical FundDuring summer camp, Trey jumped off of an inflatable bounce house into the designated landing mat. In a freak accident, he fell head first onto the concrete 15 feet below. Within minutes, he was flown to Tampa General Hospital where he was admited to the ICU with two broken bones in his neck, a bruised spinal chord, and other related injuries. He has undergone two surgeries, both of which were as succesful as possible.At this time, we are waiting for the swelling in his body to go down, and will have more info in the coming days. It’s a serious injury, but he’s showing good signs.His parents, Doug and Norma Smetana, and his siblings Ludwig and Naylene need our love, prayers and support.All donations will go towards financial relief for Trey and the Smetana family.Thank you for your support. Did he jump onto a mat or did he jump head first onto the concrete? Or did he jump onto a mat that was 15 ft off the ground – and fell backwards?Something doesn’t add up.Here’s why I ask: If we send our kids to camp – shouldn’t we expect that some type of caution should be taken with our kids that we don’t have a mat 15 ft off the ground that a kid could get seriously injured from? Well, I see I am not the only one confused and concerned.
a few weeks ago.He was there as a cabin leader and decided to swim in the pool at the camp. He is pacemaker dependent and went the week after camp for his yearly heart check-up. His cardiologist asked him what was he doing on a certain date at a certain time and my son told him he was at church youth camp and was swimming at that time.His cardiologist told him his pacemaker recorded an event where an outside source of electricity had caused an electric shock to his pacemaker. It affected the upper chamber of his heart, which was a good thing, because if it had affected the lower chamber, he would have died immediately.His cardiologist told him a person with a healthy heart wouldn’t notice it at all, BUT if a child who is pacemaker dependent gets in that pool, it will killed it immediately. He was so upset that he said he would be willing to be an expert witness for my son if he decided to take this any further.Before my son got in the pool he asked if the pool had been fixed, because the same thing happened last year at camp. He was told that it had been completely overhauled and it was safe to swim in. Well, we now know better.He contacted the SO and reported what his cardiologist told him to the state youth director and was told he would check into it. We haven’t heard anything since. But I will say this, If it had killed my son, because the state is too cheap to have someone who knows something about pools and electricity to address the problem correctly, I would own that ten million dollar building in Cleveland!It will be only a mater of time before someone is killed at these youth camps, because our leaders will get the cheapest (meaning free) person who may have some knowledge about how to rig something that will get us through another camp, before we have to spend any money.
No matter all the details for the kid, he is still hurt. I am a youth camp enthusiast. Youth Camps are the best thing that ever happened for our youth. I was in the first NC ‘Boy’s Camp’ and many following.I have attended, been a counselor, and taught in many Youth Camps. I cannot imagine the horrendous job the Youth Director and his board face with the varied kids and modern physical situation. How this kid got hurt I have no idea from the little bit I have read. What I do know is there is a kid, probably a very good kid, and his family who are in a delimmea and will need some finances as they work thru the next few weeks. I have donated. I consider it a privilege, youth camps were good for me. Some of my best friends were there. My mentor, RAy Campbell, chalk artist, and magician became a life long friend and guide.Please take time to remember this kid and his family. The facts will prevail. I am praying Trey will be able to live a normal life.Maybe we try too much. Ain’t no way we are gonna compete with Disney, actually kids do not need it. How totally scary, Ernie! I am so thankful your son is OK! This is just my opinion, but I think you should get the cardiologist to write a letter stating what’s you’ve told us and send it to the AB, the youth director, and to Tim Hill. This could seriously save someone’s life. And this probably isn’t the only place that this could possibly happen. What a terrible thing that would be for everyone to live with. I wasn’t at camp the week this happened, but I was at camp the week before, and saw the equipment that was used. It was safe for the students. In my opinion – and I REALLY don’t mean for this to be disrespectful to an injured young man – the only way to get hurt would be to use the equipment improperly.

My daughter was at camp when this happened. She told us about it Friday morning when we picked her up early for our trip home to Michigan. Trey overshot the landing pad, from what my daughter gathered (she was in the cabin at the time). She saw the helicopter land. We are praying for Trey. At this point – the focus of my prayers will be on the child. I pray he can walk and function normally in a short period of time________________
