I’m tired of so much of it fellers. Preachers expected to be cheerleaders at a pep rally tryin to work up some kinda superficial emotional response or feedback. Seriously, the ole timer is nauseated by it all. Lemme give ya some examples:1. Preacher comes to the podium an starts usin phrases like Slap ya neighbor an yell Jesus, C’mon, saints, raise your hands an claim your miracle, or I can’t git no help up in here. The purpose a all this is to git folk worked up emotionally.2. White preachers walkin to the pulpit an immediately commence talkin in a African-American accent, grovelin voice an all, even though they don’t talk like at in everday life. A few I’ve heard do this: Ron Carpenter Jr, Paula White, Rockin Rod Parsley, et al.
Leave all the theatrics to Hollywood and simply bring the Word. I heard the other night that there are places you can go and learn to have a preacher voice?
Kind of like Obamas speeches etc;Normal Speech to white folks;I want to… uhhh uhhh uhhh…. talk about…. uhhh uhhh uhhh …….Obama’s opening words in the speech to the NAACP
Sometimes a pastor definitely does need to take on the role of a cheerleader, especially when there is discouragement and no cheerfulness. I would agree that we should not just more or less aim for excitement for excitement’s sake alone (hype), but there is definitely something to be said for encouraging/cheering/rousing the troops when necessary. I would also agree that white preachers adopting a black preacher’s voice and intonation is ridiculous and silly.Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

I heard a man comment that he’d gone to a church where the preacher said, They get more excited at a football game than you are trying to hype the church up. He thought, Why should church be like a football game? I think a lot of Pentecostals and Charismatics associate enthusiasm with spirituality. The Psalms do talk about rejoicing before the Lord, and there is a place for that. But it is possible to have hype and not be any more spiritual than a less hyped-up congregation.I also get the impression that churches from Holiness backgrounds tend to be more into equating emotional excitement with spirituality. Maybe only slightly so. I’m sure there are A/G preachers who try to get the churches to be more excited (cheerleading) but it seems to be a bigger deal in churches in the southeast that used to believed in ‘sanctification’ as a one-time act of grace after sanctification. For some of the churches, it may just be an aspect of their Appalachian church subculture. People who think this way think of churches where people aren’t as enthusiastic as ‘dead.’ Didn’t Bound for Beulah recently post that churches that didn’t shout were going to Hell? That’s an exaggerated example of what I’m talking about.Recently, someone filmed a clip of a woman bending over to keep her balance, almost falling, while riding a hoverboard and put it on Facebook. They put the caption on there, When the Holy Ghost takes control. I posted verses about blaspheming the Holy Ghost. I think a lot of people are way too eager to make God to brunt of their jokes. But the whole mindset is something I find troublesome about a lot of Pentecostals.I saw a preacher at a church pray for a woman. She starts shouting. The preacher said, That’s the Holy Ghost. I don’t think a woman shouting is the Holy Ghost, even if she got touched. How does he know she just didn’t get excited? Our response to the Spirit of God or our excitement about the things of God isn’t the Holy Ghost. If preachers tell people that it’s spiritual to go to church and laugh or vomit, some people are going to do just that to be more spiritual. I was at a meeting a large fellowship of COG churches put together to let some of the proponents of the ‘Toronto Blessing’ speak in Jakarta around 1997 or 1998. One of them kept doing this weird move like he was doing some kind of half squat move. They talked about this move that was happening, and said when the Spirit came on people, they might make weird movements, etc. Fortunately, the people didn’t go for it. I heard in some countries, crowds of people were running around acting weird. I’m not slamming Toronto. I didn’t go there. But the two speakers didn’t seem to be presenting much substance in that meeting, IMO________________
