I'm certain no one has intentionally changed key assignments (unless we're talking about hackers). My adult son and I are the only ones who use the computer. My son rarely uses the computer and would not have changed the settings, and even if he had, he would certainly have mentioned it to me when I told him about the problems I was having. It all started one day (or perhaps a dark and stormy night) when I noticed that the key on the top row of the computer which brightens the screen did not respond. Hmm. A few days later the computer accepted no input whatsoever from the physical keyboard, though I could use the Touch Keyboard. My first response was to reboot. I think that did work on at least a couple of occasions, but once when it did not, I asked my son for assistance. He suggested removing the battery and reinserting it. That did work. I noticed it would sometimes happen after the computer updated itself. I began searching online for some answers and came across an hp forum where other users were experiencing the same problem. One solution involved a complex sequence of turning on, removing the battery, unplugging, replacing battery, plugging in, holding down the start button for 30 secs. (and I assume doing the hokey pokey). But, I did take away from that that I could remove the battery sometimes to solve the problem of not being able to input from the physical keyboard. One user said he noticed that he often encountered the problem immediately after using the keys on the top row of his keyboard. (So I tried to use the mouse and icons in the task bar to change the brightness or volume rather than the top row of keys.) Also one of the users was lamenting that overwrite was the default rather than insert and that you must press the insert key EVERY time you want to use it rather than just setting it to one way. This is a recent change on this computer as well. (And perhaps that happened with an update.) Anyway, I realized I would have to press the function + 'ins' key, which is a key on the top row, but it still doesn't work the way I expect it to, and any revision is annoying. I make lots of revisions. After those issues began happening is when I noticed the weird pasting action happening with a capital 'h' or with 'shift + quote marks.'The thing for me is that I use the computer for an escape. Diagnosing problems with the computer is not the escape I'm looking for.
