At Mt. Carmel, Elijah prayed, and fire came down from heaven and consumed the sacrifice. Then, he got a message from Jezebel who was seeking to kill him, ran away, heard God at Sinai, and got some instructions and came back. Here, the king sends soldiers to bring him to the king. He keeps calling down fire from heaven until one captain begs for his life and the lives of the others. Then an angel tells him to go with the captain and not be afraid. So was the calling down fire from heaven thing Elijah's idea. Was fire coming down and consuming people something that happened under his 'stewardship'? Was the angel intervening here, keeping Elijah from calling down fire on the people again

I am sure I could not be trusted with the ability to call down fire from heaven at will. While Elijah, I am sure, was pretty close to God, could he handle it either? And if he did have the power at will, would he have ever cowered in hiding? If I had the power, I am sure I would let them drop me in Iran and do a walkabout for a few days - calling fire down as necessary.Repeat in North Korea.Repeat in Cleveland TN.

51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.

Looking at the context, the idolatrous king apparently needed to be reminded who the one true God is, and how seriously he hates idolatry, especially when practiced by a king who definitely knew better.

No I do not think he could. But on the lighter side I remembered what my brother, a port gunner on the ship, said happened on His Destroyer Escort in WWII in an actual battle and a suicide plane headed for his ship. The Skipper ordered over the 1MC, FIRE AT WILLHe said that the Starboard gunner actually Yelled to him, , Hey Frank, Who is WILL? then fired until the plane was in the sea, before it hit their ship. He said that to explain to his kid brother how 'silly' crazy some folk acted under the pressure of war, facing death.WILL, has been in danger for years. Some facts but mostly just my [email protected]/

That's funny, Cojak. You are really making us laugh with some of your posts lately.I'm reminded of something else about Will. A while back Chief Charging Battery was studying a chart in the back of one of his Bibles about the succession of the Caesars in Bible times. It can get confusing with all the different names that were used for those people and Chief Charging Battery definitely remembered studying a Tiberius, who wasn't listed on his chart. I assured him the internet could answer all his questions, so I went to Wikipedia and started reading to him. I came across one tidbit that baffled me when it said that Augustus (aka Gaius Octavius aka Octavianus) was adopted by Gaius Julius Caesar (aka Julius Caesar) posthumously. I wondered aloud how one could adopt someone after he was dead (and exactly which one was dead first). As I continued to read and follow links, I had an aha moment when it said that
