Post subject: | wayne: COG(Cleveland) vs COG(MT. Assembly) questions |
I know several current COG(Cleveland) pastors who were once COG(Mt. Assembly) members/pastors. What is the difference between the two denominations?I know in our area the Mt. Assembly seems to not be doing very well. Their congregations are usually very small and very exclusive. They seem to be more holy than most and stick to hymns and traditional southern gospel/gospel songs. I was in service with some Mt. Assembly folks recently and you could feel the spiritual divide in the room and see that there was a definite difference in the 2 groups. |

Nope. That would be the Grady Kent schism. Jerusalem Acres church. A move was made in the 1912 General Assembly to merge with COG Cleveland. Mountain Assembly representatives rejected the COG proposal. |

There isn't a whole of difference doctrinally. Historically I would venture to say there wasn't a drastic difference in polity or organization either. As Dr. Duck pointed out they almost merged with the COG at one time. Anyhow, here is a link to their website if you haven't visited it already. Maybe it will answer your questions better.www.cgmahdq.org |

Lookin at the leadership of the COGMA, it looks like AJT and the COGOP. Them Walden boys has got the executive leadership wrapped up in a dictatorship.www.cgmahdq.org/id5.html |

I was stunned to have learned that the COGMA, thought birthed from the same holiness revival as the COG, was NOT part of the early COG. It was a separate and independent movement from our own, though espousing many similarities.I asked why we weren't all in the same church. The guy told me that, if we were willing, they would be happy to take us in (SMILE). I had that one coming. |

Post subject: | Mat: It would not be a merge |
It would not be a merge, it would be a disappearance. The COGMA churches and history would be a bump in the road to the COG consciousness. Would merging with COG enhance the local congregation, or would it be adsorbed and sold off to support the State Offices? Would the ministers of the COGMA be given the same status as they now hold, or would entry to the COG require them to start over in their licensee/ordination process? If they merge this week, could their ordained ministers kept they status in the COG and vote in Assembly this summer? We are in an age of new networks, not old denominations. That is why many large (and not so large) congregations who once were part of a denomination have broken away to form (semi-independent) new relationships with other ministries. I know that in the COGOP there is a new incorporation process underway, developed by leadership, which would allow local churches to retain their property and choose for themselves if they wanted to participate in a merger with another denomination. So the question is, why would I want to join a denomination with OTCP just to have my spiritual heritage mocked, belittled and made fun of? Sometimes this forum makes being part of Calvary Chapel or Vineyard look inviting. |
