I heard the story today of a large church that most of us would have heard of having a baby dedication Sunday recently. Parents email or call the church office and give their names and the Baby's name to be included in the dedication service and prayer. At a certain point in the service those parents are called to the stage with said child in tow for the moment they've anticipated for quite some time. Because this is a multi-ethnic, internationally flavored, church not all names are easily known or easily pronounced. Not sure how large this church is. When I pastored a church of about 400 we always had a form to fill out. Of course, in a church our size, I knew most of the couples. But the form has the name of the parents as well as the child. It is there we would have had a little knowledge of whether the parents were the same sex. It is then that we would have addressed the issue. It is best not to be caught in that situation.

I would have done the same thing in that moment & then made a leadership addition to make sure these types of things are vetted a little better. I've done baby dedications for single moms & sometimes they bring a friend or family member of the same gender. I've never thought to ask about the relationship status before but now it makes me wonder.
