A quote in another thread got me thinking about this verse. I thought I'd open it up to a variety of perspectives.

Questions:Do you think this prophecy extended to current times or was it almost entirely fulfilled in the past? (early church?)If you think it is still being fulfilled in current times, do you think those it is speaking about will use the actual title Christ or will it be more to the effect of the anointed one? Just curious. These questions could be important as we wait for the real Christ's appearing. I think is definitely for today. Some of these self proclaimed men of God have said they were God.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List of people claimed to be Jesus

Some of these I had forgotten about and others were unknown to me. The claims certainly weren't confined to the early church. One just doesn't hear about them very often.Matthew 24:5

Consider understanding the passage as many will come in Christ's name, endorsing Jesus is the Anointed One, only to seek entry into the pulpit and hearts of hearers. It parallels Jesus' thoughts in Matthew 7:21-23,

According to passages in Deuteronomy 13& 18, prophets who spoke in God's name yet without a real relationship with Him were considered presumptuous prophets. I think that interpretation is interesting. If I understand, it seems a clearer way to word that interpretation is For many will come in my name, saying

Both the Byzantine/Majority and the NA26 include the article the in the Greek text. There will be those individuals who think nothing of proclaiming Jesus as the Messiah only to get their foot in the door.Conversely, as Jude points out, there will be false prophets who deny Jesus as Master and Lord God-HonoringChrist-CenteredBible-BasedSpirit-Led

To answer your question I would say it was both.It happened in the days of Christ & it still happens today. We just had a guy here in the news the other day who said he was doing the things he did because he was jesus the christ. Lower case used on purpose.Cops sent this jesus to the mental ward. Jim Jones & David Koresh claimed to be Jesus so I think we see it all around us today. Empty nest syndrome is for the birds!Email me at: [email protected] planters are focused on just one thing ...introducing people to Jesus!
