He looks at what she was receiving and gives her some advice.He tells her that if she wants to be blessed financially, she needs to bring all the tithe into the storehouse. he also tells her it is the church’s policy not to give from the benevolence fund to non-tithers. In order to qualify, and to be blessed financially, he tells her that she must pay another $32,000 in tithes for the year in addition to the $2,000 she has already given. The assistant pastor suggested she step out in faith and make a solemn vow to the LORD to pay the rest of the amount in a few months and trust God to provide. Is the hypothetical assistant pastor’s advice Biblical________________
Not sure how the pastor can reconcile that with the NT model for giving (2 Cor. 9:7)
I am going to say that these HYPOTHETICAL church leaders would hypothetically be Pharisees, foolish, and other things (that I can’t think of right now that start with the f-sound)!I wonder if they pay tithes on their Christmas gifts? Or that cake that Sis. Jones dropped off, did they understand that they SAVED them X dollars, and so they need to pay tithes on that?And on Homecoming, do they pay tithes on the difference in what they consumed vs. what they brought? Oh, we can play foolish and condemnation-type games all day long on this stuff–and I’m here all week!

It is ‘them Hypothetical cases’ that get us in trouble. LOLWhen I married a dedicated COG girl at 17, she had paid tithe since she was 8 yrs old, to the penny. The 10% had been drilled into her so much she had no problem moving that decimal point one place to the left and rounding up. Our first month she did the tithe. $7.90 for the month. I made the dumb statement of just make it $8. WHAT? that is not 10%.That is a fact from 1956. She is an intelligent person. An honor roll student and a member of the Beta club (what ever that is). But from her youth that number was sacred, 10%. She came to accept 12% to 25%. She is still not around to my belief of ‘giving’ without calling it her tithe. She will die with that thought. Tithing 10% ain’t a sin, tht is for sure, unless you condemn others who do not see your way, she never has. He mother died in my arms as I tried to resuscitate her and after death when her purse was opened that COG tithe envelope was filled out for the week. She paid her tithe after death. Grace is scary to some. That’s why Paul’s message of grace appeared so scandalous to the Judaizers. What ? No law? The people will cast off all restraint right? I’ve been there scraping to pay tithes. It’s often been a sacrifice for me to simply tithe. Then there those you mention that tithe precisely 10%, yet won’t go above with either time or treasure. Sad.What if the single mom or dad, or poor family that has a heart to honor God in tithing, but only manages 7-8%? Do we tell them that they are robbing God? How many Christians have been made to feel as if they are less than because they can’t make 10%? They do what they can. Their heart is in the proper place. But some will shun them and call them thieves because they didn’t hit that hard percentage.For the record, I tithe. Also, say someone blesses you with a good used car, worth around $10,000. You are low income, struggling to make ends meet, and was given the car because your old one broke down and you did not have the money to repair it or buy another. Some suggest that you need to grab your checkbook and tithe $1k. But usually, those that receive a blessing like that need it. If they had the $1k, they’d have spent it getting the old car running again. There are some that insist we tithe on these gifts. How are you supposed to pay tithes on medical care, food stamps, and canned goods? And $5000 worth of canned goods? That IS a food bank! I really don’t get this post! I am still trying to figure out where the $32,000 came from. You don’t pay tithes on a benefit the Lord has blessed you with!
